BEST BUTCHERIES ANNOUNCED
Results revealed in competition to find South Africa’s top butcheries
Johannesburg, 23 April 2013: The country’s top butchers are certainly worth their beef. The best butcheries both nationally and regionally were announced at a luncheon today attended by senior members of the meat production and retail industry, award finalists, judges and media.
The Cleaver Awards were launched in 2005 to meet the needs of the consumer by raising standards amongst butcheries. Since these awards started eight year ago, butchery standards have significantly improved and feedback from consumers show that the majority perceive the Cleaver Awards to be a seal of approval. An initiative of the South African Red Meat Industry Forum, these Awards acknowledge butcheries which meet consumer expectations on in-store hygiene, the supply of quality assured roller marked South African Beef, their level of competency in offering the best advice on meal preparations and perceived value for money.
Butchers were judged according to three categories namely;
- Butcheries with four or more till points,

ARE YOU COMPLIANT WITH THE STOCK THEFT LEGISLATION?
|
The Red Meat Industry Forum urges all industry role-players to co-operate to help prevent stock theft.
Stock theft stripped the economy of R430 million during the 2011/2012 period with goats to the value of R42 million, sheep to the value of R92 million and cattle to the value of R295 million stolen. This scourge threatens both the commercial farming sector as well as the emergent farming sector in most of the country.
The increase in stock theft cannot be attributed only to the activities of the Stock theft Units, but also to the non-compliance by industry role-players who do not see that livestock are properly identified. Livestock buyers; such as farmers, speculators, stock-auctions, feedlots and abattoirs can be or are unknowingly recipients of stolen livestock and are thereby transgressing the law and liable for a fine or prosecution.
The Animal Identification Act, (Act 6 of 2002), makes provision for the compulsory marking of livestock and the Stock theft Act, (Act 57 of 1959) controls the movement of livestock. Both these Acts have been put in place to support the industry and SAPS to combat stock theft and make it easier to recover stolen livestock. It appears that a large part of the livestock trade does not comply by the provisions of these Acts and does not comply with the basic requirements to prevent stock theft. The Red Meat Industry Forum encourages its member organizations to comply with these Acts.
“Many stock theft court cases are lost because of disputes regarding the positive identification of stolen livestock and the ability to prove ownership. If an animal is marked with a registered brand or tattoo, disputes will be avoided.” says Brig Singh (Stock theft Unit, head office).
The Red Meat Industry Forum urgently requests:
· That all livestock owners register a unique brand mark in their name and to apply it to all livestock in their possession in the prescribed manner as described in the Animal Identification Act, (Act 6 of 2002)
· The completion and submission of the ‘Document of Identification’ and ‘Stock Removal Certificate’ with all transactions
· That all livestock buyers, auctioneers, feedlots and abattoirs confirm livestock ownership and refuse to take ownership of livestock that are not marked or where the necessary ‘Document of Identification’ and ‘Stock Removal Certificate’ are not supplied
· That all ‘Documents of Identification’ be kept on record for 12 months
The Red Meat Industry Forum requests its member organizations to urgently play an active role in stock theft prevention and requests that the Stock theft Units strictly apply the Animal Identification Act, (Act 6 of 2002) and the Stock theft Act, (Act 57 of 1959) to all buyers of livestock as from 1 January 2013 with zero tolerance.
Once all stakeholders as well as all the relevant government departments from national to local level become actively involved in the application of these Acts then more stock thieves will be convicted and the negative impact of stock theft on the South African Livestock Industry will be reduced.

THE CLEAVER AWARDS -- TOP BUTCHERS ANNOUNCED
|
Quality - Hygiene - Service and Value recognised by prestigious awards

The winners of the 2008 Cleaver Awards were announced last Thursday at a luncheon at the Southern Sun Garden Court, OR Tambo International Airport Hotel.

Research conducted by The Red Meat Industry has found that consumers expect top quality beef, a hygienic environment as well as a friendly and efficient service when visiting their butchery or supermarket. As a result, the Cleaver Awards were launched in 2005 to meet the needs of the consumer by raising standards amongst butcheries. Initially, 2 500 entries were received in the inaugural Cleaver Awards, with this figure increasing to over 11 000 entries across all 9 provinces this year. These awards have successfully assured the consumer that they can purchase South African Beef with confidence and have also directly involved the butchers themselves by rewarding and recognising South Africa's best butcheries.

Nominations were opened towards the end of last year for consumers around the country to vote and nominate their best butchery. "Consumers are becoming more educated about what to expect from their butchers and are giving credit to those butchers who are exceeding their expectations", says Dave Ford, spokesperson for the Red Meat Industry in South Africa.

From the thousands of nominations received, a short list of 75 finalists were chosen. A 212 point checklist was used to independently assess all of these finalists, and based on criteria such as in-store hygiene, supplying quality assured roller marked SA Beef, offering the best advice as to meal preparations and cost-effective ways of buying the best cuts.

"Our consumers today have less time, more to do, and are more discerning in their purchases and have a grater variety of meat solutions. The butcher and his team are the final interface with consumers for our beef products and their role cannot be underestimated", comments Mr Frikkie Potgieter, the chairman of the Beef-Up Marketing Committee. "Butchers form part of the current trend in consumer behaviour where people seek almost a "village feel" - connectivity, realness and authenticity - as part of their shopping experience."

"We are a well-known local butchery, with a reputation for great service and quality. After our award last year, which resulted in us attracting even more customers to our store, we decided to make even more improvements, which resulted in us winning a Platinum Award this year. We are thrilled," says butchery owner Dirk Crafford, who runs the store along with his wife, two daughters and son-in-law. "We have customers who travel long distances to our store from Potchefstroom, Johannesburg and Pretoria. We pride ourselves in only selling A-grade quality local products, no imports. "With the success of the awards again last year, and the overwhelming response from consumers, we foresee these prestigious awards becoming bigger and better in the future." |

South African Feedlot Association.

The SA Feedlot Association is an umbrella organisation that addresses collective interests of the South African Feedlot industry which collectively markets close to 80% of the total beef produced in South Africa.

Following the recent deregulation of the South African Meat Industry, a number of the larger feedlots have now vertically integrated into processing, wholesaling and even retailing their own quality beef products.
